The book Honesty in Politics, a collaborative work by Seyed Mohammad-Taghi Al-Ghafour and Razieh Zarei, has been published in Persian in 208 pages by the Islamic Sciences and Culture Academy.
This work is the outcome of a coherent research project. By focusing on the relationship between ethics and politics, it addresses one of the most challenging issues within the contemporary political culture of Iran. The analytical and problem-oriented approach of the text places it among the serious and applied research endeavors in this field, successfully attracting the attention of academic audiences and political researchers.
The content of the book is organized into three chapters, commencing with a description of the state of dishonesty within certain administrative processes in the country. Adopting an institutional and cultural perspective, the authors subsequently analyze the factors contributing to the emergence of dishonesty within political institutions and among state officials. They demonstrate that this phenomenon is not merely an individual anomaly; rather, it is deeply rooted in the structures, procedures, and the underlying logic governing power.
The final chapter is dedicated to proposing structural and individual solutions to remedy dishonesty, striving to establish a nexus between institutional reform and ethical reform. Without engaging in hasty judgments, the book exposes the reader to the hidden layers of this issue and its profound consequences for public trust and political efficacy.
In terms of methodology, realism, and its simultaneous attention to both ethics and politics, the book is considered a substantial contribution to the literature on political ethics in Iran. The primary strength of the work lies in its refusal to reduce the problem of dishonesty to mere personal weaknesses, emphasizing instead the imperative of reforming political and cultural structures.
The back cover blurb of the book reads: “The relationship between the concepts of honesty and politics is remarkably complex. In the pursuit of their objectives, politicians are frequently accused of lying and distorting reality, whereas the public inherently trusts politicians who exhibit honesty. Dishonesty within political institutions is directly correlated with intricate subjects such as power, ethics, and politics.”
“Within the context of dishonesty in any country’s political institutions, there are events, actions, and decisions that possess the potential to inflict damage upon various political entities across the country. By investigating and elucidating the factors, roots, and patterns of dishonesty within these institutions, as well as their overarching role in politics and society, such damage can be largely averted.”
