The book The Argument from Design and Neo-Darwinism, authored in Persian by Hamed Sajedi, has been published and officially launched in a 368-page volume by the Research Institute for Islamic Culture and Thought. By focusing on the intersection of scientific explanations of evolution and philosophical arguments concerning design, this work explores one of the most contentious subjects at the intersection of the philosophy of science, the philosophy of religion, and the specific field of the philosophy of evolution.
In recent years, prominent figures such as Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennett, operating within a framework often referred to as “science-based atheism,” have sought to leverage the advancements of the empirical sciences to undermine theological explanations. Specifically, Dawkins, drawing upon a particular interpretation of Neo-Darwinism, posits that the acceptance of evolutionary theory obviates the need to postulate a supernatural designer.
The present volume challenges this assertion by drawing upon contemporary findings in biology, geology, and cosmology, underpinned by rigorous philosophical analysis. The author endeavors to demonstrate that evolutionary theory itself, in order to be comprehensively explanatory, relies upon a foundational order—an order that, he argues, transcends the boundaries of exclusively scientific explanations and necessitates philosophical interpretation.
Among the innovative discussions presented in this work are the proposition of the “15 Foundational Conditions of Evolution,” the exploration of “Generalized Fine-Tuning” across various levels of existence, the investigation into the specific conditions required for the emergence of complex life, and the analysis of teleology within the process of human evolution. Collectively, these arguments aim to illustrate that while evolutionary explanations may be successful on a descriptive level, they encounter fundamental philosophical inquiries at the level of ultimate explanation.
Ultimately, this book represents a significant contribution to the philosophy of evolution, acting as an endeavor to foster a dialogue between the natural sciences and philosophy, as well as a re-examination of the “Argument from Design” in the light of contemporary scientific achievements. It is an effort that seeks to redefine the nexus of science, nature, and meaning in the modern world.
