Navigating the Encounter with Western Philosophy

Our encounter with Western philosophy must be active and conscious, not passive; systematic, not fragmented; fundamental, not superficial; and ultimately productive, not consumptive. This path necessitates long-term planning and robust support from both seminary and academic institutions. Only through such a rigorous approach can we safeguard our philosophical heritage while simultaneously addressing the intellectual needs of contemporary Islamic society.

A Three-Layered Model: Philosophy, Social Science, and Jurisprudence

The discussion regarding the “philosophies of disciplines” (فلسفه‌های مضاف) is a pivotal topic within the domain of rational sciences that demands special attention. To ensure the efficacy of intellectual disciplines, the relationship between three distinct domains must be accurately delineated: the philosophy of disciplines, the humanities, and jurisprudential discussions.

In this regard, I propose a three-layered model. If we consider the concept of “culture” as an example:

  • The First Layer (Philosophy of Culture): This layer analyzes the essence and fundamental truth of culture. It serves as the foundational tier, responsible for elucidating the conceptual and epistemic underpinnings.
  • The Second Layer (Social Science of Culture): This layer studies cultural phenomena empirically and analytically at the societal level.
  • The Third Layer (Jurisprudence of Culture): This final layer is dedicated to deriving normative religious rulings (Fiqh) related to cultural issues.

The Mediating Role of the Philosophies of Disciplines

A crucial methodological point is that one cannot proceed directly to the jurisprudence of culture without having first traversed the preceding two layers. The philosophy of culture acts as the theoretical infrastructure, imposing its conceptual dominance upon the social sciences of culture. Together, these two foundational layers provide the necessary groundwork for jurisprudence. Within this framework, the role of the philosophies of disciplines is vital; they serve as a communicative bridge linking fundamental philosophical discourse with the more micro-level issues found within the humanities and jurisprudence.

The Centrality of Exegesis and Religious Texts

Another necessity in this endeavor is rigorous engagement with religious texts, utilizing contemporary advancements and the precise methodologies developed within the rational tradition. The religious text is of paramount significance because our revolution is inextricably intertwined with it.

Today, just as Allameh Tabatabai authored a comprehensive exegesis tailored to his own era, we require a renewed exegetical endeavor for the present stage of our revolution and the future of the new Islamic civilization. This is essential to address contemporary inquiries and to systematically articulate the solutions that the Quran offers for modern challenges.

A Trajectory for the Islamization of the Humanities

If rigorous intellectual work is to be undertaken, we must follow a sequential path: first, strengthen our deep philosophical foundations; next, develop the philosophies of disciplines oriented toward the humanities; and ultimately, address the humanities themselves.

We possess a rich historical experience in Islamic philosophy demonstrating how Islamic principles gradually permeated philosophical thought, eventually becoming its very animating spirit. This successful historical model can be replicated in the humanities. There must be a concentrated effort to forge methodologies that uncover the sacred truths of religion within these academic fields. This necessitates a profound discussion regarding the model of Religious Science (علم دینی) and the methodologies for its production. Ultimately, this approach will generate the necessary motivation among researchers to guide the trajectory toward Islamization, all without compromising the academic integrity and rigor of their specialized environments.
