A New Introduction to the Civilizational Interpretation of the Quran: Articulating an Interdisciplinary Approach in Islamic Studies

The book An Introduction to the Civilizational Interpretation of the Quran (Thematic Essays), the culmination of a research project led by Habibollah Babaei in collaboration with a group of researchers, has been published in Persian by the Islamic Sciences and Culture Academy Press in 502 pages. This work represents an innovative endeavor within the field of contemporary Quranic studies, adopting an interdisciplinary perspective to rethink the relationship between the sacred text and the concept of civilization.

The fundamental conceptual and methodological distinction of this work lies in its differentiation between “civilization as an object of study” and “civilization as an approach.” In the former paradigm, civilization is subjected to ontological study as an external phenomenon. Conversely, the latter paradigm, which constitutes the theoretical foundation of this book, focuses on civilization as an “epistemic tool” or an analytical lens through which phenomena can be understood and interpreted.

By adopting this second approach, the collection’s primary objective is the theoretical articulation and formulation of the “civilizational paradigm” and its methodological indicators. Subsequently, to demonstrate its analytical efficacy, this theoretical framework is applied to concrete domains and practical instances, such as the educational system, the institution of the family, the structure of science, media, the state, and the concept of resistance. Such a perspective provides the necessary capacity for a systematic and macro-level reading of social phenomena grounded in Quranic teachings.

The authors posit the hypothesis that analyzing complex contemporary developments without recourse to a coherent civilizational framework runs the risk of reductionism and analytical impoverishment. Consequently, the book does not merely linger in the realm of abstract discourse; rather, it strives to establish an organic link between theory and practice, thereby providing the conceptual apparatus requisite for the critical analysis of social realities. This study contributes to understanding civilizational interpretation of the Quran.
